Salt Lake City, Utah – This week, Delta Airlines terminated direct flights from Salt Lake City to Casper, Wyoming, forcing passengers to accept a layover in Denver, Colorado.

Alex Koehlke, a Delta spokesperson, said that the airline’s final flight to Casper was on December 3. United Airlines will now be the sole airline offering a direct service from Salt Lake International Airport to Casper. The flight had been run by Skywest on behalf of Delta.

A disagreement between SkyWest and officials in Natrona County, Wyoming, where Casper is located, led to the flight’s termination, according to Cowboy State Daily. Earlier this year, Natrona County commissioners chose to terminate the arrangement with SkyWest, which had been offering the direct service in exchange for a minimum revenue guarantee of $1.3 million.

After the airport board suggested canceling the flight because of “long-term viability” concerns, Natrona County made that decision. According to Cowboy State, SkyWest was instructed by Delta officials to reschedule the midday flight to early morning and late night.

The county objected to continue to pay for the aircraft because of the decrease in traveler demand caused by the time shift.

Since November 2021, Natrona County and SkyWest had been bound by the agreement.
