Salt Lake City, Utah – Then there were six more.

Following a first-round vote by fans, the Smith Entertainment Group reduced the initial list of 20 names for Utah’s prospective NHL franchise to only six. These names are as follows, arranged alphabetically:

• Utah Blizzard
• Utah Hockey Club
• Utah Mammoth
• Utah Outlaws
• Utah Venom
• Utah Yeti

A second round of voting is now live, and fans can start selecting their favorites until June 20 at 11:59 p.m. Votes can be cast online, here.

Early in May, SEG released the complete list of 20 names so that supporters could vote on their favorites. In round one, more over 520,000 Utah voters cast ballots, and according to SEG, they made it obvious that the names listed above were overwhelming favorites.

The six finalists received 60% of the total votes, according to SEG, which qualified all six for a rerun of the poll.

But it will still be some time before the ultimate name is announced. The Utah NHL’s final branding won’t be revealed until “well into” the debut 2024–25 season, according to team owner Ryan Smith’s previous confirmation.

The NHL team from Utah will don jerseys with the words “UTAH” across the front for the first time. According to SEG, this is “a reflection of the team’s new roots in the state and dedication to its fanbase.” Before the team’s second season, the permanent branding—which includes the colors, mascot, and logo—will be unveiled following the selection of the team’s official name.

There may have been a preview of the interim first-year brand’s appearance in trademark applications submitted to the USPTO earlier this week. A number of wordmarks and logos bearing the name “Utah Hockey Club” in a blue, black, and white color scheme were submitted.

The first hockey season in Utah is slated to start in early October of 2024.
