Single-vehicle crash involving officer in Salt Lake City
Salt Lake City, Utah — After a crash that happened just after 5 a.m. Saturday, traffic was backed up on the north side of Interstate 5.
According to officials from the Utah Highway Patrol a single-vehicle crash involving a police officer from the Unified Police Department happened 1500 south near downtown Salt Lake City.
They said the officer veered off the shoulder into the right barrier, and then crossed all northbound lanes and struck the left barrier.
According to troopers who got to the scene, the officer was conscious but not alert.
He was hospitalized for treatment of non life threatening injuries. Troopers said the officer was in stable condition and expected to recover.
It was not clear what caused the officer to veer into the barrier. Troopers were at the scene for several hours investigating the crash.
Traffic was diverted around the crash and onto a collector ramp. Drivers have been advised to avoid the area.
According to troopers the interstate is expected to reopen around 8 a.m.
