Prescription Drug Take Back Day in West Valley
West Valley, Utah – Today, Saturday, October 28, 2023, West Valley City will stand united with communities across the nation in addressing a critical public safety and health issue by hosting a local “DEA Prescription Drug Take Back Day.” From 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, residents are encouraged to bring their unused or expired prescription medications to CVS Pharmacy at 3148 West 3500 South for safe, anonymous disposal.
This national initiative, conducted in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), responds to an urgent issue highlighted in the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health: the misuse of prescription drugs.
According to the Rockwall News, millions of Americans misused prescription medications, including 9.7 million on pain relievers, 4.9 million on stimulants, and 5.9 million on tranquilizers or sedatives. Alarmingly, the majority of these drugs were procured from the medicine cabinets of family or friends, spotlighting the risk of unsecured medications in homes.
Safe disposal of unused and expired prescriptions is crucial in curbing the epidemic of drug misuse and accidental poisoning. By hosting this event, authorities aim to create safer homes and communities by eliminating access to these potentially dangerous expired medications.
The Take Back Day provides a no-questions-asked, convenient, and effective means for individuals to dispose of their drugs. Proper drug disposal also protects the environment, as it prevents the contamination of water supplies that can result from improper flushing of medications.
Community members of West Valley City and beyond are invited to participate in this life-saving initiative. By doing so, they contribute to the collective effort in preventing drug addiction and overdose deaths. For more information on the event, including additional drop-off locations, please visit the DEA’s official website.
In uniting for this cause, West Valley City underscores its commitment to safeguarding public health and safety, underscoring the importance of each individual’s role in combating prescription drug misuse.
