Suspect and police officer hit by car during arrest attempt
WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — A police officer and suspect were hit by a car late Saturday night during an arrest attempt in West Valley City.
Officers responded to “The Redwood Apartment” complex just before midnight on Saturday on report of a man who reportedly broke a window and was running through the parking lot screaming “kill me.”
The 20-year-old man unsuccessfully attempted to carjack an occupied vehicle.
When that didn’t work, the man ran away from officers and ran onto Redwood Road, where he was intentionally trying to get hit by passing vehicles.
Officers tried to block traffic in order to get the man to safety, but a vehicle hit the man and officer.
The man was taken to the hospital in critical condition with head injuries.
West Valley City Police said that due to the nature of the incident, the Officer Involved Critical Incident Protocol was invoked and protocol Team One would be conducting a full investigation.
